If the foundation is firm the building can withstand calamities. The practice of yoga is the foundation so that the self is not shaken under any circumstances.

Yoga Foundations Course

I developed the Yoga Foundations class series several years ago when I owned and operated Maya Shakti Yoga Studio in Anacortes, Washington. I moved there during the summer of 2013 from Scottsdale, Arizona immediately upon completing an intensive Yoga Therapy and Yoga Teacher Training program at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe, Arizona. I invested five years of my life studying and applying Yoga techniques and philosophies at Maya Shakti. I closed that location during the summer of 2018, and returned to Arizona. I now offer it as a private course for individuals and small groups at an agreed upon location.

Begin your Yoga journey here…

So you’ve been thinking about going to Yoga classes and you haven’t done it yet.

You want to be healthier and stronger, have more flexibility, and feel more balanced. You’d like to have a greater sense of peace and well-being. Maybe your doctor told you to explore it or a friend or family member has invited you to check it out.

You might feel uncomfortable with the thought of attending a class. You have no idea how to do any of those poses and you may be afraid that you won’t be able to! You don’t even know what to wear or what to bring!

It’s normal to feel that way, in fact, most people have the same reasons for wanting to do Yoga and more of the same reasons why they haven’t done it yet.

The good news is, you don’t have to know anything! All you have to do is bring yourself and an open mind. This is why we call it a Yoga practice, not a Yoga perfect. We are PRACTICING and LEARNING.

Even Yogis and Yoginis who have been practicing for years still have a “beginner’s mind.” They know the value of a strong foundation and will revisit and refine the basics over and over again.

This course will introduce you to the foundational elements of Yoga in a relaxed, yet structured way. You can repeat this course as often as you like, because it will never feel the same. We continually work toward mastering the poses and deepening our practice.

This class series is strongly encouraged for the brand new beginner, as well as those who have done a few classes already. More experienced practitioners will benefit by revisiting the basics to fine tune their practice.

Yoga teachers will learn how to better assist their students by deepening their own understanding of the fundamentals of Yoga.

I invite you to participate in this course to give yourself a solid Yoga foundation so you will feel confident and comfortable as you begin or advance your Yoga journey.

No matter what your level of fitness is, and regardless of your physical limitations, your age, or how you feel, you CAN practice Yoga.

YOGA FOUNDATIONS

I created this course after noticing there were a LOT of people who WANTED to do Yoga and didn’t know where to start. Join me in a safe, supportive, low pressure environment where you will learn the basics very quickly. Be on your way to practicing Yoga at home on your own, or get ready to explore the various styles at your local studios. You may also repeat this course as often as you like.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

A brief history of Yoga.

The goal of Yoga most people don’t know about. (It has nothing to do with doing poses perfectly.)

The benefits of Yoga.

How to breathe correctly.

What the Yoga Sutras are.

What the 8 Limbs of Yoga are and how they can help you learn to live a life of calm, peace, and balance.

My signature “road map” to Yoga poses. This road map breaks down poses in a simple, easy to remember sequence that you will be able to refer to no matter what pose you are practicing.

How to use Yoga props.

Yoga Studio Ettiquette.

How to choose your own way to incorporate Yoga into your life.

And more…

Amanda says...

Thinking about the Yoga Foundations class, I think my biggest take away was self-awareness.

Being able to sit with my emotions and let them go through.

Breathing has been a game changer. I had some negative self-talk going on but learning to not let anxiety get to me and how to take a moment to breathe and relax, I’ve been able to stop those anxious thoughts and be generally more happy each day.

I fell in love with yoga and now attend classes 4 days a week!

Lacee says...

It's hard to look back and think about that decision. What made me go? And I couldn’t tell you completely what compelled me to go.

Everything was stacked up against the decision, really. Low on funds, I am not fond of group classes and I definitely didn't think I ‘needed help’ but I still did it!

Something I learned from the class is that I am REALLY good at talking myself out of things… I am forever thankful of that sporadic decision of mine, and that I didn't talk myself out of attending this perspective altering course.

I learned so much in this class, and am more in love with Yoga (and myself) then I ever was before.

Dawn’s class is exactly what I’ve been yearning for, everything missing from prior yoga classes I’ve taken elsewhere in my life.
